ITSS PhD Fellows Prepare for Semester Abroad

IN THE SAME SEA PhD Fellows Gabriëlle La Croix and Rasmus Christensen are soon leaving Copenhagen for their semesters abroad! This is a great opportunity for them to work on their dissertations and to engage with scholars beyond Denmark.

In September 2023, Rasmus is going to Sweden for a stay at Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies. He is looking forward to engaging with the vibrant research environment in which many different fields such as archaeology, literature, history, and sociology come together in the study of the complexity of colonialism and its aftermath. I hope that the stay will enable me to widen the perspective of my own dissertational work. During his stay, he will be reading Danish colonial correspondence from the 1770s and early 1780s, which were periods with unusual hurricane activity, in order to examine how colonial authorities reacted to and tried to cope with these natural disasters and their impact on society.

During the fall semester of 2023, Gabriëlle will be joining the History Department at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States of America. She will primarily be working with Dr. Pernille Røge. As an associate professor, Dr. Røge specializes in France and its colonial empire, and more broadly in early modern European expansion. Her current project focuses on Danish colonial expansion in a transimperial world. The main priority of Gabriëlle's stay is to work on two chapters of her dissertation, as well as to work with Dr. Røge to further her knowledge on Danish (and possibly French) colonial expansion. Next to this she may also be participating in graduate reading seminars and reading groups, as well as joining events hosted by the department and the World History Center.

The rest of the IN THE SAME SEA team wishes Rasmus and Gabriëlle much success in their travels, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Copenhagen in a few months!
