New Publication: An Eighteenth Century Account of St. Croix, USVI

IN THE SAME SEA PhD Fellow Rasmus Christensen has published an annotated version of part of an account of St. Croix authored in the mid-1760s. The Danish-language article entitled “Beretninger om De Danske Westindiske Sukker-Eylande” appears in the journal Danske Magazin. While the whole account seemed to have been planned to consist of a description of all three Danish colonies (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix), including their histories, environments, peoples, and cultures, only the first chapter concerning an overall description of St. Croix is extant in the Danish National Archives. Whether the rest of the account was ever written or just not preserved to this day is unknown.

The article will soon be available from the publisher here, but in the meantime a preprint is available at academia.edu.
